EAST RIDING COUNCIL UNDER PRESSURE TO ADDRESS TRAFFIC CONGESTION AS CONTROVERSIAL NEW HOUSING SCHEME APPROVED IN WILLERBY

Councillors have told developers of a proposed new housing scheme in Willerby that they must play their part in helping to address traffic congestion in the area if they want to go ahead with the 141-home project.

East Riding’s Strategic Planning Committee yesterday approved an application by Beal Homes, to develop the Willerby Hill Site in Kirk Ella, but added a condition stipulating that none of the properties can be occupied until a system of works to address the local traffic congestion has been devised and a start date for the work announced.

Councillors for the Willerby and Kirk Ella Ward, Shaun Horton and Ben Weeks, objected to the application, and spoke at the committee. They highlighted that the infrastructure in Willerby and Kirk Ella is ‘failing’ its residents, and that work needs to be undertaken to alleviate the traffic congestion before more residents move in.

Speaking after the committee Councillor Weeks said; “Obviously we are disappointed that the committee did not refuse this application, but we are pleased that they listened to the concerns of the residents and accepted the need for urgent improvement of the road infrastructure around the site.”

“The condition the committee has added puts pressure on the Council to agree a solution and put the plans in place. We will continue to work with Council officers, and offer any support we can to move this project forward, not just for the benefit of current residents, but the new residents who will eventually move into these properties.”
